Richard Paul Lohse made this systematically-colored artwork, and you can feel the artist's dedication and the almost mathematical precision. I imagine Lohse standing before the canvas, meticulously planning each block of color, perhaps driven by a desire to find harmony and order. I can imagine him stepping back, squinting, making minute adjustments to each and every block until it all came together as one harmonious symphony of colour. The paint looks pretty thin, probably applied in careful measured coats. These bands of green, blue, yellow, orange and red are so carefully balanced, and you can see how it all merges at the vertical axis. The piece reminds me of the work of other painters, like Josef Albers, who were also exploring color theory and perception. Ultimately, this painting is an invitation to slow down, look closely, and discover something new with each viewing.
