Pieter Christoffel Wonder created Time with oil paints. The artist carefully applied layer upon layer of paint to bring this allegorical figure to life, creating a palpable sense of depth and texture, and inviting us to consider its materiality, and to reflect on its inherent qualities of substance, weight, color and form. Wonder employed a traditional technique that has been around for centuries, a time-honored tradition involving complex, skilled processes. The painting is filled with a sense of somberness. Time seems wearied, burdened, and burdened by the weight of the shroud. It has been painstakingly created with detail. By focusing on materials, making, and context, we come to understand the full meaning of Wonder's art, and to challenge traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
