Dimensions 3/8 x 7/16 x 1/4 in. (1 x 1.1 x 0.6 cm)

This tiny bead, shaped like a bird, was carved from banded agate by an unknown artisan. The stone itself is the star here, its layers of black, white, and brown creating a swirling pattern that gives the bird a sense of movement. Think about the lapidary work involved. Someone carefully ground and polished this hard material, using tools that would have been simple but effective: perhaps a bow drill and various abrasive powders. The process would have been slow, demanding patience and a deep understanding of the stone's properties. Beyond its beauty, this bead speaks to the wider social role of adornment. It may have been a trade good, a symbol of status, or simply a personal treasure. Its small size belies the skill and labor invested in its creation. Appreciating the craftsmanship involved challenges our tendency to separate "art" from everyday objects.
