This sketch by Cornelis Vreedenburgh captures figures in a scene rendered in charcoal. Look at the confident lines defining the figures, a kind of freedom and looseness to it. I imagine Vreedenburgh at the beach, quickly trying to capture the play of light on the sea and people, making a record of moments. I am always curious about other artists and their ways of seeing the world. I love how Vreedenburgh used a light touch, not belaboring any one detail, but rather letting the image emerge as a whole. Like the confidence of a jazz musician, his marks are like notes, each one essential, and perfectly placed. Look at the way he captures the figure of the woman seated on the beach, her body a series of quick, elegant strokes. I feel the artist’s hand moving across the page. Isn't it amazing how artists through their individual perceptions, share with us the poetry of everyday life.
