Hannah Hoch made this collage of cut-and-pasted paper, "Von oben," from various printed media. Can you imagine her sifting through piles of magazines and newspapers, searching for the right images, the perfect gesture? It’s like she’s riffing on the world, chopping it up and reassembling it. I love how she combines fragments of faces, bodies, and landscapes to create something entirely new and a bit unsettling. There are these figures perched high above a city, like they're surveying the world from some strange vantage point. And those disembodied faces – what's up with that? This reminds me of when I’m in the studio, cutting shapes out of canvas or paper, arranging and rearranging them until something clicks. It’s like a conversation, a back-and-forth between me and the materials, each informing the other. It's all about the push and pull, the give and take, the constant questioning and exploration that makes art so damn exciting.
