Here is a work by Antoni Tapies, called "Skeleton on Material," and it looks like it’s made from ash and bone, maybe even tears and sweat. I can imagine Tapies in his studio layering dark, thick materials—earth, charcoal, maybe even ground-up rock—to build up this textured surface. Then comes the ghostly white skeleton emerging from the darkness. Is it painted, scratched, or carved into the surface? It looks like it’s drawn with a stick, and the hand scratches numbers into the ribcage. Each mark seems like a small act of rebellion against death. Looking at this piece, I think of other artists like Alberto Burri, who used unconventional materials to create powerful and tactile works. There’s a conversation happening here about the body, mortality, and the power of art to confront these uncomfortable truths. I admire how Tapies embraces the messiness and uncertainty of the medium, because sometimes it is the not knowing that makes art worth making.
