This is André Dauchez's etching of a landscape in Bretagne, made sometime around the early 20th century. It's all about process, isn't it? The way Dauchez uses these intricate, scratchy lines, it feels like he's building the scene right in front of us. Look at the reeds in the foreground. Each stroke is so deliberate, creating this dense, almost tactile texture. You can practically feel the dampness of the marsh. And the sky? It's a swirl of chaotic energy, capturing the wildness of the landscape. It reminds me of some of the early expressionist printmakers, like Emil Nolde, who used the medium to convey raw emotion and a visceral connection to the natural world. Dauchez invites us to embrace the messy, imperfect beauty of the world around us. There’s no one way to read it.
