Joshua Flint’s painting, Circadian Rhythm, feels like it came into being through layers of trial, error, and intuition. You can almost see the artist circling, adding and subtracting. I can really sympathize with Flint, imagining him conjuring this hazy space. What was he thinking when he made it? It's as if he's layered different images and places on top of each other in the same painting. The paint seems pretty thin in most areas but there is some juicy texture in the buildings on the left. The way he blurs the boundaries makes it hard to know where one thing ends and another begins. It’s interesting to see how artists are always in conversation, inspiring one another across time. To me, painting is a form of embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty. What I like most about this painting is the possibility that there isn't one fixed way to read it!
