This is Joakim Skovgaard’s etching, “Adam blandt dyrene”. Skovgaard, working in the late 19th and early 20th century, places a nude Adam in a verdant landscape amongst an array of animals. This work invites us to consider the cultural and theological context of the time, specifically the relationship between humanity and nature, as interpreted through a Christian lens. Adam, the first man, is typically depicted as the dominant figure. Yet, here he is rendered as contemplative, almost melancholic. The animals surround him, not as subjects, but as co-inhabitants of this space. The dog at his side suggests companionship and a blurring between the human and animal realms. Skovgaard's Adam seems to embody a pre-Fall innocence. He hasn’t yet been cast out, hasn’t tasted the fruit, and remains in harmony with nature. The artist coaxes us to reflect on a prelapsarian state, one where man and animal exist together, before the strict hierarchies and dominion described in the Bible. Perhaps Skovgaard is inviting us to consider a world where humanity lives with, rather than above, the natural world.
