This sepia photograph shows a young woman with two children, captured by Johannes Maria Petrus Antonius Huijsen. I’m thinking about the woman in the picture, probably the mother. It seems she is hovering slightly anxiously, behind her kids. I wonder if she’s thinking about her own mother, or of other women artists? What would it have been like to be a woman, making art, at that time? How to mother and be an artist? As an artist, I am always thinking about my own position in the world, and how that filters through into my work. Huijsen is another artist, now long gone, who's thinking has been made manifest, fixed in time. So I’m always curious about what they might be thinking or feeling, and how their unique perspective changes what I might think or feel myself. Art is a conversation like that.
