This drawing of a wall cabinet with an étagère, or set of shelves, uses traditional materials: paper, ink and watercolor wash. Though unsigned, the design suggests it was made by someone well-versed in the French Rococo style. Note the emphasis on flowing lines, floral and shell-like ornamentation, and the overall effect of lightness and grace. The furniture itself would have been made by highly skilled woodworkers, perhaps carvers and gilders. Such intensive labor was a marker of luxury in the 18th century. These traditions also played a vital role in creating visual richness and social distinction, setting the elite apart. This drawing, in turn, served as an instruction – a visualization of that status for wealthy clients. Even on paper, it’s easy to see how the materiality of the intended object speaks volumes about its purpose and place in society. Appreciating the labor involved truly bridges the gap between the drawing and the finished product.
