Editor: This is a Follis of Diocletian from Aquileia. The bronze is heavily patinated, but the images are still remarkably clear. What do you find most striking about the design? Curator: The formal arrangement is quite deliberate. Observe the rigid profile of Diocletian on one side, juxtaposed against the standing figures on the reverse. Note the texture, the incised lines, the bas-relief. Editor: It’s fascinating how such small details convey authority. Curator: Indeed. The composition uses symmetry and controlled space to make a statement about power and order. The medium itself - a coin - reinforces this message of systemic control. Editor: I hadn’t considered how the inherent nature of a coin influences its artistic expression. Thanks for pointing that out.
