This 1550 engraving, "Tolerantie in tegenspoed veroorzaakt kennis van God," by Dutch artist Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert, depicts a muscular, bearded, and nude figure with a helmet, a long staff, and a draped cloth. The figure holds a platter with two eyes on it. The work is a clear example of Coornhert's interest in allegorical and humanist themes, exploring the concept of tolerance and adversity as paths to divine knowledge. The engraving's stark lines and detailed anatomical rendering are characteristic of the Northern Renaissance style. It is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum.
