Georges Valmier made this print, ‘From Collection Decors et Couleurs, Album No. 1’, at an unknown date, using screen printing. There's a real sense of play in the bold lines and flat planes of color. It feels like Valmier is inviting us to rearrange these shapes in our minds, to explore the endless possibilities of abstraction. Look at the way he uses color. The blues and yellows create a vibrant contrast, while the pink and black add a touch of elegance. There's a real sense of balance here, a harmony that's both pleasing and stimulating. The textures are smooth, the colors are opaque, and the lines are clean and decisive. Notice that little semi-circle at the bottom of the central form, how it pulls the whole composition together. It's a small detail, but it makes a big difference. This print reminds me of Sonia Delaunay's work, in the way it combines geometric abstraction with a sense of rhythm and movement. Both artists were interested in the interplay of color and form, and in the potential of abstraction to create new ways of seeing the world.
