Roni Horn made this photograph, part of her series Still Water, of the River Thames. The surface tension of the river is so gorgeous; it is the result of the interaction between water molecules and the air. I imagine Roni Horn standing at the water's edge, watching the shifting patterns, the subtle gradations of light and dark. It’s almost as if she's trying to capture a feeling, an emotional state, in the way that some painters might use a brushstroke. The image is full of movement and reflection, both literally and figuratively. I wonder what she might have been thinking, standing there, watching the Thames flow by. Artists, you know, are always in conversation with each other, across time and space. This image reminds me of the work of Gerhard Richter, particularly his seascapes. There's something about the way he captures the light and the atmosphere. It's like they're both trying to capture something that's always in flux, always changing. The work is like an embodied expression, embracing uncertainty and allowing for multiple interpretations.
