Dirk van der Toorn created this study of an old man with a beard in monochrome. The composition focuses predominantly on the sitter’s head and shoulders. Observe how the figure's gaze and posture are oriented to the right, a compositional choice which encourages the viewer's eye to follow this line of sight. Consider the relationship between the textured rendering of the beard and the smoother handling of the face. The artist may have sought to explore contrasts between the material roughness of age, versus a more idealized representation of the human form. The formal elements here may subtly undermine traditional notions of portraiture. By drawing attention to the study of the head, van der Toorn invites reflection on the conventions and cultural codes embedded within artistic representation. This is a work that seems to question rather than affirm.
