Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this design for a rug with watercolor and graphite. It makes me think about the conversations artists have with one another across time. I wonder what Cachet was thinking when they made it, and how it feels to design something that someone else will later make. Did Cachet work with the weavers? Did he think about them at all? Maybe he never saw the finished rug. The colors are both muted and rich, like old velvet. The shapes remind me of leaves, or maybe flames. And is that a key in the center? The whole thing feels a bit like a coat of arms, with the shapes almost symmetrical. This piece is part of the artist's wider exploration of decorative design. It also connects to the work of other artists who've played with patterns, like William Morris. It’s nice to think about artists being inspired by one another. The artwork embodies that exchange of ideas, inviting new interpretations.
