Vasile Popescu painted Rooftops with oils at an unknown date. I look at it, and it feels like I’m seeing a memory slowly coming into focus, like when you wake up from a dream. The red tile rooftops and soft green hills make me think of a hot summer day. The paint isn’t too thick, but you can feel the surface and the marks of his brush. Popescu’s use of simplified shapes and slightly wonky perspective gives the buildings a kind of childlike charm. The little square windows peek out from the warm surfaces like eyes! I wonder if Popescu was thinking about what it means to look up and see the world from a new perspective, to see the world in simple shapes and colours. This reminds me of Cezanne in some ways. The work is a conversation with how we see and feel the world. It seems like the painting is just one part of an ongoing creative process.
