Kazimir Malevich made this painting, Suprematism, with oil on canvas. I'm really feeling these bold shapes and colors. Imagine Malevich in his studio, probably in Russia. What's he thinking as he's laying down these blocks of red, black, and yellow? Is he thinking about a new kind of space? Look how the thick black bar runs almost vertically, like some kind of I-beam. I wonder how long it took to get the relationships just right. Painters build on what came before, and Malevich was surely inspired by other painters, like maybe Picasso or Matisse. This is part of a wider conversation about what painting can be, and how it can challenge our perceptions of space and form. It makes me wanna go into my studio right now! There is a lot of joy in painting that comes from the freedom to mess around, make mistakes, and let the painting take you somewhere unexpected.
