Curator: The first thing I notice is the labor embedded within the image. The careful setting of the table, the implied work of preparing the meal and decorating the space... it all speaks to the social function of the family unit. What do you think about the reproduction of this photographic image? Editor: I hadn't considered that! It also reflects a certain level of access to photography. Curator: Exactly. The means of production and consumption are all here, telling a story of a particular social class and its values. Editor: I see that now. It's much more complex than just a simple family photo.
