Jean Miotte made "Illimité cosmique" with what looks like acrylic paint and big brushes or maybe squeegees, pushing the pigment around in swathes. The palette is bright and the marks immediate, which really shows his process. The physicality of the paint is so important here. Look at the way he's applied the black, it's thick and juicy in places, almost sculptural, while in others it's thinned down to a transparent glaze. You can practically see the movement of his arm, the energy of the gesture, frozen in time, like a dance. And those drips – they're not accidental, they're part of the performance. This all reminds me of de Kooning, that same sense of raw, unbridled expression, but with a French twist. Art's always talking to itself, right? It's an ongoing conversation. And the best part is, there's no right or wrong way to join in. It’s up to us to have our own conversation with it.
