Almir Mavignier's Punktstruktur is a kind of optical field of circles printed on paper, and it makes you realize how much of artmaking is just about noticing. The metallic circles hover against a black background, like distant stars. The evenness is compelling. The whole thing pulses, reminding me of Bridget Riley. You see the circles, but they also disappear into the ground, into a flat plane. There is a real beauty in the mechanical. Mavignier was interested in Gestalt theory, in the psychology of visual perception. As viewers, we try to make sense of it, to impose an order. But the image resists, flickering before your eyes. Art is a conversation and an ongoing experiment! Isn’t that great?
