This armchair was crafted by Michel Gourdin, a French ébéniste in the 18th century. Note the floral motifs adorning the upholstery and carved frame, a celebration of nature characteristic of the Rococo period. Consider the prominent flower at the back, an emblem resonating across time and cultures. From ancient Greek garlands symbolizing triumph and honor, to Renaissance allegories of love and beauty, the flower has long been a potent symbol. Think of Botticelli's Primavera, where Flora scatters blossoms, awakening the senses. Yet, here, these floral forms take on a certain formality. The controlled symmetry and stylized execution reflect a desire to tame nature. It reveals a complex interplay between the human desire for order and our enduring fascination with the organic world. This armchair speaks to the subconscious, reminding us of our connection to nature and the enduring symbols we use to understand it.
