Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made these two ex libris designs sometime around 1931. Just looking at them, you can see the hand of the artist, right? It's all about the process. The way he's used color, that limited palette of black and sienna, gives a warmth, almost like fire. And the texture! It's not just flat. You can imagine the artist really digging in, using those lines to create depth. Look closely at how each line seems to flicker, like flames dancing around the central initials. It's pretty clear this was meant to mark books that the owner really cared about. Cachet reminds me a bit of woodcut artists like Max Pechstein, or maybe even some of the earlier German Expressionists. But he's doing his own thing. It's a great reminder that art isn't about perfection; it's about expression.
