This photograph, by Folkert Idzes de Jong, shows us a farmhouse near a waterway, and was most likely made with a simple camera, at the turn of the last century. The image is almost monochromatic, and that’s probably due to the printing process. What I love about the sepia tones of this print is how they create a sense of distance and timelessness. It's not just a picture; it's a little window into another time, and into the artist’s process of seeing and framing the world. Look closely at the way the water reflects the buildings, and how the light touches the edges of the farmhouse roof. It's like the artist was really interested in the texture of the world around him. I’m reminded of other artists who were fascinated by the way light and shadow could transform everyday scenes, like some of the early Impressionist painters. But de Jong’s photograph also has a kind of naive charm that feels very unique. It’s like a little gem, inviting us to slow down and appreciate the beauty of simplicity.
