Editor: Here we have "Profile of a Woman with a Vase of Flowers" by Odilon Redon. It's dreamlike, almost hazy. What's your take on the relationship between the woman and the flowers? Curator: It feels like a quiet conversation, doesn't it? Redon often explored the inner world. The woman’s contemplative gaze mirrors the delicate, ephemeral nature of the flowers. Do you sense a shared vulnerability? Editor: Absolutely, it's as if they’re both caught in a moment of reflection, fading slightly at the edges. Curator: Redon used color so poetically. These aren’t just flowers; they're a symbol of beauty, but also of life's fleeting nature, wouldn't you say? Editor: I agree, it definitely adds a layer of depth. Curator: It makes you wonder, doesn’t it, about what both are contemplating. Editor: Definitely! This piece has so much to unpack.

This is one of a series of paintings by Redon which combine flowers and a female head. For Redon this motif was expressive of a harmony or correspondence between nature and the human soul. Here the subdued colours emphasise the ethereal quality of the image. The woman's head is drawn in a simple, almost archaic style, and is likely to have been inspired by early Italian Renaissance portraits. Gallery label, September 2004
