Editor: Here we have an untitled print by Anish Kapoor. It’s a moody, almost cosmic swirl of charcoal greys and blacks. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It reminds me of how Kapoor often explores the void, both physical and metaphorical. Thinking about his Indian heritage, could this print be about visualizing the unseeable, the cyclical nature of existence, or even the caste system’s historical oppression? Editor: Oppression? I hadn't considered that. Curator: Consider the power dynamics implied in the dark, engulfing forms. How might these resonate with marginalized communities' experiences of erasure? Editor: That gives me a lot to think about. Thanks! Curator: Absolutely, art is always a reflection of, and a challenge to, power.

This is one in a suite of thirteen etchings entitled Blackness from Her Womb. The suite was produced in an edition of thirty of which the first twelve were bound as books, and the remaining eighteen were presented unbound in boxed portfolios made of hand-dyed parchment. Tate’s suite is number twenty-five, and is one of the portfolio versions. Each of the thirteen prints is signed by the artist. The project was designed and printed by master engraver Jacob Samuel.
