This 1794 woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun’ei depicts the renowned kabuki actor Morita Kanya VIII as the character Tatsugorō. Shun'ei was a leading artist in the Katsukawa school of ukiyo-e printmaking known for its dynamic compositions and bold colors. The print is a portrait of the actor in costume, with a strong, dramatic expression on his face. This work is an excellent example of the genre of yakusha-e, or "actor prints," popular in Edo-era Japan.
