I’m looking at Sven Lukin's Canestoga, and I’m thinking about its making, the construction of this geometric abstraction, and how it extends into space. Imagine Lukin in the studio, the careful planning, cutting, and assembling. The subtle gradations of gray against the sharp pop of teal and orange. It’s like a playful argument between flatness and depth. It’s not exactly painting, not quite sculpture, but something delightfully in-between. The colors, the hard edges, the dynamic composition. It's like he's channeling some futuristic landscape or maybe even a circuit board. I wonder if he was thinking about technology, architecture, or the possibilities of abstraction? There's a precision and a kind of boldness here that I really admire. Artists are always in conversation with each other, and I bet that Lukin was inspired by constructivism and hard-edge painting, but then brought his own quirky sensibility to the mix. It reminds me that art is about taking risks and pushing boundaries and having fun!
