This drawing of cows and figures in front of a farmhouse was made by James de Rijk in the 19th century. Notice how the animals, particularly the cows, are arranged almost in a protective circle around the humans. This motif of animals as protectors is ancient. We see it echoed in the Minoan bull-leaping frescoes of Knossos, where the bull is both a symbol of power and a sacred guardian, or in the Egyptian goddess Hathor, depicted as a cow, embodying motherhood and nurturing protection. Consider how this image might tap into a deep-seated human need for safety and connection with nature. Perhaps, subconsciously, we recognize the cyclical nature of life, where the roles of protector and protected blur, reminding us of our primal bonds with the natural world. This scene, seemingly simple, evokes a powerful, universal yearning for harmony and security.
