Haatje Pieters Oosterhuis rendered this drawing, “Herberginterieur,” with pen in brown and grey ink, heightened with watercolour. The composition's strength lies in its depiction of raw, uninhibited activity. Notice how the structural framework of the inn, with its robust beams and thatch, sets a stage for the dynamic interaction of figures within. The curved arch mirrors and contains the riotous energy of the peasants carousing below. The subdued palette – ochres, browns, and muted reds – contrasts the vibrant scene of merriment.
