Gerhard Ludvig Lahde made this vignette of the Nordic arms sometime in the late 18th or early 19th century using engraving. This printing technique involves cutting a design into a flat surface, inking the recessed lines, and then transferring the image to paper under great pressure. The fine lines and delicate shading you see here speak to Lahde's mastery of the tools and the labor-intensive process of engraving. This was a time-consuming task demanding precision and control.
