This is Willem Frederik Boelsums' photograph of the Dutch naval ship Hr.Ms. Holland. The sepia tone gives the image a nostalgic feel, like a memory fading at the edges. You can see how the light hits the water, creating this rippled texture. If you look closer, you will also see the details of the ship, each mark a record of the artist’s observation and technical skill. It's like a dance between what's visible and what's suggested. The ship appears solid but the reflections in the water are soft and blurry. Boelsums seems to be asking us to question what we perceive as real, and what's merely a reflection. This is what the best art always does: It makes you think. I'm reminded of Eugène Atget, another photographer who captured fleeting moments with a similar depth of feeling. Ultimately, this photograph is an invitation to see the world with fresh eyes, to appreciate the layers of meaning in what might at first appear simple.
