Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac made this etching of Provence with delicate strokes that feel like they’re just whispering about the landscape. You know, sometimes when I'm painting, it's like I'm having a conversation with the trees, the hills, or whatever. I wonder if Segonzac felt that way too. The etching is all lines, like he’s feeling his way through the scene with a pen, capturing the light and shadow with these tiny marks. He's not trying to give us all the answers. He’s inviting us into the experience of seeing. It’s like he’s saying, "Here’s what caught my eye, what do you see?" It’s like a landscape seen through memory. Painters have always looked to each other, riffing off ideas, pushing and pulling the conversation forward and sideways through time. Segonzac made this and it's still speaking. I hope mine do the same.
