André Dunoyer de Segonzac made this print, Provence, using etching, and it’s all about the scratch. See how the marks, pulled from a plate, capture the landscape’s essence? It’s like he’s thinking through the world, one tiny line at a time. Look closely at the trees framing the view; the strokes are nervous and full of energy, and yet they feel calm. Now, check out the horizon. Those horizontal lines give a sense of distance, but they’re also totally abstract. Segonzac is kind of a traditionalist but I can see hints of Matisse in his work, both artists had an interest in landscape. Prints are often about repetition, but here, each impression is unique, full of its own spirit. Like the best art, it invites you to slow down, look closely, and just… be.
