This photograph, "Untitled (Santa giving gifts to children)" by Robert Burian, captures a moment, or more like the ghost of a moment, in stark monochrome. The image feels like a half-remembered dream, its inverted tones creating a kind of surreal familiarity. Look at the figure of Santa. Even though it's a photographic negative, there's a real warmth in the posture, a sense of giving. The graininess of the image adds to this, like a fond memory worn smooth by time. There’s a tension in the contrast. The heavy darks push against the stark whites, creating a sense of depth and volume where you wouldn’t expect it. The blurriness around the edges only adds to the intimate and somewhat surreal quality. It reminds me of some of Diane Arbus's more off-kilter portraits, or even Weegee's crime scene photos – an everyday scene pushed to the edge of something else. Ultimately, it's a beautiful, unsettling image that lingers in the mind long after you've turned away.
