Pug pandemonium 

Carl Reichert captured this Pug Pandemonium with oil on canvas, and from the looks of it, a little mischief too. The play between the exotic bird and the domestic dogs is quite telling of its time. We see the bird, a representation of luxury and the exotic, teetering on its perch, seemingly antagonizing the pugs. The letter ripped open below introduces a narrative, a moment frozen in time. The contrast between the wild bird and domesticated dogs can remind us of similar contrasts throughout art history. Consider, for instance, how similar pairings symbolize humanity’s struggle to reconcile the wild, untamed aspects of nature with our desire for order.
