Editor: This is Helena Almeida's "Drawing (with pigment)," a sketch on paper. The dark, smudged shading contrasts sharply with the delicate, almost tentative lines of the figure. What do you make of this stark visual dichotomy? Curator: The opposition between the controlled line and the unbounded pigment directs our attention to the surface itself. Do you perceive how the sketch and the pigment interact on a plane? Editor: Yes, the figure seems constrained by the lines, whereas the pigment appears more visceral and free-flowing. The composition's tension enhances its visual impact. Curator: Precisely. It invites a contemplation on the interplay between representation and abstraction, challenging the presumed boundaries of each. Editor: That's fascinating; I hadn't considered it in those terms. Curator: Hopefully, our brief exchange has illuminated the artwork's rich dialogue between form and matter. Editor: Indeed, I see it now from a very different perspective.

This is one of thirty-eight drawings in Tate’s collection by Almeida, all of which are rendered in ink, pen and pigment on sheets of off-white A4 paper. Each sheet has four holes punched down one side, and a number of the sheets have drawings on both sides. The images consist of simple line drawings, overlaid with passages of dense pigment. Each depicts the artist’s body in whole or in part. Many detail her hands, often in the act of drawing. Other images show the artist’s legs, arms or torso, or show her performing an action: dragging an unidentifiable mass that is attached to her ankle by a rope, or pushing her prone body up from the floor.
