Editor: Here we have a reproduction of "a painting with dueling men" by Simon Harmon Vedder, sometime before 1898. It's an engraving, a print. The scene is intensely dramatic – stiff, even. What do you see in this piece? Curator: What strikes me is how this print, likely disseminated through a publication by L. van Leer & Co, attempts to legitimize a potentially violent encounter—the duel—through historical painting tropes. We see what looks like an enclosed space. The social dynamics at play here are quite loaded. The gaze of onlookers further institutionalizes it. Editor: I hadn't thought about the legitimizing aspect. Why depict such a grim ritual? Curator: Consider the era. This piece appears before 1898. The "code of honor" still held some sway. Representing it through print also speaks volumes. It's meant for wide distribution. Think of the target audience; the engraving serves almost as propaganda of that social class. But is this a glorification, or a stark depiction of something more sinister? Editor: Good point! I guess it’s open to interpretation, based on where the viewer stands, literally and socially. Thank you for your unique socio-political perspectives, they offer interesting contexts. Curator: Likewise! This made me reflect upon the complicated public role art occupies and reproduces through print and other mediums.
