This woodblock print was created by Utagawa Kuniyasu. Here, we see a woman holding a puppet of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VII, embodying the character Karigane Bunshichi. The puppet, brandishing a sword, represents power and drama, a controlled force in the woman's hands. Notice the recurring motif of the sword, reminiscent of ancient symbols of authority, echoing through time from Roman gladius to medieval knights’ armaments. Here, however, the sword is wielded by a puppet, questioning true agency. This recalls the Commedia dell'arte characters, where Harlequin, with his slapstick, challenged societal norms through comedic theater. The cherry blossoms above symbolize the fleeting nature of life and beauty, a common memento mori. They create a stark contrast with the enduring themes of power and control represented by the sword. The cyclical progression of symbols in art reveals how cultural memory constantly resurfaces, evolving and adapting in different historical contexts.
