Andy Warhol took this Polaroid of Nina Bischofberger, a small child dressed in overalls. It’s such a tender image, you know? I really feel for Warhol in this moment, having to capture the fleeting energy of childhood, the little face of a person just beginning. Look at the directness in her gaze and how squat her stance is. It's interesting to see Warhol working with this very immediate medium. There's no hiding, no smudging here. Just this flash of light. The colors feel so of the time, so perfectly 70s – that orange of her outfit, the slight sepia tone of the photo. It makes you think about how photography and painting talk to each other. The photographic image is something that so many painters look to; Lichtenstein, of course, but also Gerhard Richter. It all comes back to this desire to freeze a moment, to capture something real, even if you know it’s always slipping away.
