Tro 1601

Jan Saenredam created this engraving, "Tro," which is now held at the SMK, using a plate measuring approximately 30 by 21 centimeters. The composition immediately draws us into a world of allegorical symbolism, rendered with precise lines. The female figure, embodying faith, is centrally placed, leaning against a cross. Note how Saenredam uses the cross not just as a symbol but also as a structural element, dividing the composition and anchoring the figure within the pictorial space. Above, cherubic figures hold a laurel wreath, framing the scene with a sense of divine approval. The lines create texture, from the soft folds of the woman's robe to the swirling clouds behind.
