Jean-Baptiste Oudry created "Deer Attacked by Dogs" using etching. Notice how the composition is dominated by stark contrasts of black and white. This is an early example of photo-mechanical reproduction in printmaking to provide tonal variations. Oudry uses line and texture to convey an almost palpable sense of drama. Through the varying density and direction of lines, Oudry creates a semiotic code that emphasizes the ferocity of the dogs, with their dynamic energy and contorted bodies, against the deer whose lines are more static, projecting an aura of vulnerability. The dense layering of lines creates a sense of depth and chaos, destabilizing any clear sense of space. The composition draws you into a world of raw instinct and unchecked power, a visual testament to the darker undercurrents of nature and society, where established hierarchies are challenged.
