This engraving of Maria Anna of Austria was made in the Netherlands, likely in the mid-17th century, but the artist remains unknown. The portrait is encircled by the words "Serenissima Maria, sister of the King of the Indies, etc. of Philip IV, King of Spain." This image of Maria Anna demonstrates the use of portraiture to reinforce power and lineage in the Habsburg dynasty. The visual codes of dress, the elaborate ruff, jewelry, and hairstyle, all signify her high social standing. But more interesting is the claim to lands and titles which were accrued through marriage and conquest. The mention of the Indies reminds us of the colonial project that was financed by the Spanish Habsburgs. Further study into the Habsburg family and the visual culture of the Dutch Golden Age would provide more context for understanding the political implications of this image.
