Edvard Munch made this painting of Kragerø in the Spring, and the marks! Some are short and choppy, some are long and flowing. It’s all in the process, you know? There's this juicy, almost wet-looking quality to the paint, like he's just slapped it on, especially in the foreground. You can practically feel the dampness of the earth. Then, look at the colors – these vibrant greens and oranges, but also these moody blues and grays. Notice the way Munch uses these different colors, like in the lower part of the painting where he mixes blues and browns, the brushstrokes dancing together. I think about painters like Van Gogh, and how they too let the process and materiality of paint become the subject of the work itself. It's not just about what you see; it’s about feeling, about being in the world. Art isn't about answers, it's more about questions.
