Camille Pissarro painted Little Bridge on the Voisne, Osny, using oil on canvas. Pissarro's rural landscapes can be understood in relation to the urbanization of France and the rise of the bourgeoisie in the nineteenth century. The rapid growth of cities created a nostalgic view of the countryside, which became associated with traditional values. The artistic institutions of France, like the Académie des Beaux-Arts, promoted history painting and portraiture, while undervaluing landscapes. Pissarro and the Impressionists challenged these academic hierarchies by depicting scenes from everyday life and the natural world and by focusing on landscapes. France saw major political and social change during Pissarro’s lifetime. The rise of socialism, anarchism, and other progressive movements influenced Pissarro’s political beliefs, and his art reflects his commitment to these values. Through the analysis of works like this, and with the help of historical resources, we can better understand the social context surrounding the artists’ lives.
