Tess Jaray made this geometric print, Vault, probably using screen printing or a similar technique that allows for such clean, sharp lines. It is all about the relationships between the black lines and white space, a real back and forth, like a visual call and response. Look closely at how the lines converge and diverge. See how they build a kind of architectural form, a pyramid maybe, but also a kind of optical illusion that makes the surface feel like it is both rising and receding at the same time. There's a kind of cool, detached quality, but also a really strong sense of order and rhythm. It reminds me a little of Bridget Riley's Op Art, but with something more structural. Both artists are interested in how our eyes and minds perceive space and form, and how simple elements can create really complex effects. Like a good conversation, the beauty of this piece lies in the push and pull.
