Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this work, "Twee Mannen", with pen on paper and it's currently hanging out at the Rijksmuseum. You know, there’s a kind of art where the sketch itself *is* the art. Looking at this drawing, it’s all about the flow of the ink, the decisions made in real-time. The artist wasn't trying to represent these men perfectly, it was all about movement and feeling! See how some of the lines are scratchy, some are dark and confident? I love that. It’s like you can see the artist thinking. It's very immediate, you can see the hand of the artist moving on the page. It makes me think of other artists who worked in very immediate ways, like Cy Twombly. Ultimately, art is a conversation, right? It is never really finished.
