Franz von Stuck, a controversial figure of the late 19th and early 20th century, created "Dissonanz". He was an artist who embodied the anxieties and cultural shifts of his time. Stuck's work emerged within a society grappling with rapid industrialization and changing moral codes. Here, he presents us with figures drawn from classical mythology in a way that feels unsettlingly modern. There is a satyr, a symbol of untamed nature, and a child struggling to play the panpipes. The dissonance referred to in the title may reflect the clashing of civilization versus nature, as the tension plays out in their shared soundscape. Stuck, like many of his contemporaries, was interested in exploring the darker aspects of the human psyche. It reflects a broader cultural mood that questioned the established order and delved into the complexities of identity and existence. In the end, “Dissonanz” asks us to consider our own place within this dynamic interplay.
