Editor: Here we have "Ongehoorzaamheid en Gehoorzaamheid," or "Disobedience and Obedience," an engraving by Wierix from 1579. Looking at it, the composition feels quite dense and a bit overwhelming with all the figures and symbols. What are some ways to interpret this busy piece? Curator: This print reflects the religious and political turmoil of the late 16th century. Consider its production context: it comes out of the Dutch Revolt, a time when obedience to established authority was heavily contested. The print contrasts earthly discord with divine order. Editor: So the figures and symbolism aren't just decorative? Curator: Not at all! Examine the two central figures. On one side, you have someone seemingly turning away from divine light, surrounded by earthly temptations, the ingredients or entryway if you will. On the other side is the path of obedience and ultimate spiritual fulfillment. Wierix has carefully composed the piece as a debate on how one lives in times of socio-religious discord. What role does the book play, in your estimation? Editor: Well, the angel is presenting the book as the way toward something…redemption, perhaps? Obedience to its dictates seems key to accessing the divine. Curator: Exactly. The book symbolizes divine law and the true path to spiritual salvation amid the chaos. Notice the light emanating from above and bathing only those in adherence, while also exposing the ones that will have to suffer the wages of mortality: decay, disorder, etc. Wierix shows the socio-political relevance of adhering to sacred text in fraught times. Editor: I hadn’t fully appreciated the engraving as being part of a wider historical narrative, but that lens truly clarifies Wierix’s intent. Curator: Seeing it as part of a broader cultural and historical context is vital. The "ingredients" and "consequences" of choices. Ultimately, this work urges viewers to critically consider their actions within the socio-religious landscape.
