This photograph titled ‘Canecutter in bedrijf’ captures a grayscale scene of a machine at work. I’m struck by its mechanical aesthetic. It’s as if I can hear the clatter of metal on metal, the steady hum of the engine, and the rush of sugarcane being processed. I can imagine the artist, whoever they were, captivated by the rhythmic movement and raw power of this industrial landscape. Perhaps they were drawn to the way the light played across the metallic surfaces, creating a stark contrast between light and shadow. I imagine the artist considering, how can I compress all this action into a still moment? How can a flat surface express three-dimensional space and movement? It reminds me of some paintings by Léger, the way he reduces the human figure and objects to basic geometric forms. There’s a similar sense of mechanical precision. I find beauty in the way artists from different periods and places are inspired by the world around them, each offering a unique perspective.
